Catchbags are truly a unique solution to what is a growing problem in the world of heavy recovery. There has never been such a proliferation of the use of top boom and rotator recovery vehicles as there is now in the UK.
Top booms allow for new techniques such as end to end rolls which allow the recovery operator to right a casualty and ensure maximum travel lanes remain open, however there can be a problem when it comes to restraining the casualty, particularly one with a high centre of gravity, as the video to the right shows.
Would you want to have one of your recovery vehicles rolled over onto its side?
By using catchbags, vehicle recovery teams only need to focus on the righting of the vehicle, the descent manages itself onto the catchbags and very gradually onto the ground preventing a re-roll over due to high or shifting centre of gravity.
The use of catchbags would almost certainly have prevented the first re-roll over of this Czech fire truck in the video on the left. Again this highlights the importance of restraining a casualty and a true recovery professional knows that a slow controlled descent inspires confidence from the local emergency services than a massive crash and debris flying off the casualty.
Each catchbag package comes with two catchbags, hoses and a blower allowing complete control of the casualty descent as demonstrated in this video to the right demonstrates of a real time recovery of a truck under a bridge on the M4 in February 2009.
What can happen if a casualty isn't correctly restrained during uprighting. This Czech fire truck in the video above was righted using a mobile crane and recovery vehicle but not restrained show the potential life threating injuries and damage that can be caused by a casualty re-rolling over during the righting process.
